Tots love playing with garbage so we’re turning ‘Trash to Toy’ into a mini series within our no-screen activities! We hope you're having fun playing with trash and are so excited to bring you today’s special project:
Making a DIY bus with a milk carton!
This is a great craft for older kids as well as toddlers.
Especially ideal if you have kids old enough to make them on their own and then your younger ones can play with the buses :)
What you’ll need:
An empty milk carton
Paint/markers
Paper/print outs/stickers
Tape/glue
Patience
An empty milk carton is the absolute perfect shape for making a bus!
If you can find one that’s mostly white and designed with lighter colors, covering it up will be easier. My carton had a lot of black and grey and still showed though even though I did two coats…
A quick fix would be to just cover the carton with paper and color however you’d like! Or even just cover the carton with yellow paper and be done with it. Waiting for the paint to dry is the trickiest part of the project so it might be best to try to paint them or cover them with paper ahead of play time.
Up next is cutting out the wheels, stripes, and windows for your bus. Depending on the ages of your kids, this might be another task best to be done by a grown up ahead of time. I just found an old back shopping bag and cut my shapes out of that. If you have black construction paper that would be perfect! Or you can use white paper and color it with a black marker instead.
I kept my decoration minimal using:
- circles for the wheels
- side windows
- front & back windows
- stripes
This is where things can get really elaborate depending on if the construction of the bus is going to be engaging for your child (most toddlers will probably just want to play with the finished bus.)
You can use stickers, cut outs from the printer, paint, glitter, buttons, and anything else you can get your hands on as decoration for your bus. The limit does not exist. Your bus, your rules.
I decided to repurpose the handles of the shopping bag that I cut up to turn my bus into a statement purse! Keep your eyes peeled for it in next month's Vogue.
